This is called “doing one’s homework.” Then they telephone people and fix a time for a face-to -face interview with them. Sometimes they do telephone interviews. What do people do with their old, out of date but still useful computers? Most people don’t know how to deal with them. Many old computers are put away. Many more are simply thrown away as rubbish. Finally, some companies are thinking of ways to bring down the number of old computers. Sony has agreed to help recycle(回收) old Sony products(产品). Dell, Hewlett Packard and other companies now also take back some old computers of their own brands.
In some countries, laws have been passed, too. Computer companies have to pay for collecting and recycling their used products. And 70% of computer waste must be recycled. The idea behind the laws is that computer companies themselves should pay for the cost. That will encourage them to make computers which are easier and cheaper to repair and upgrade (升级).
Yet many people are throwing away good computers, while others cannot afford(买得起) them at all. Hundreds of organizations(组织) are working on this problem. They collect and repair old computers. One day Chen Shuai decided to go to the Mashan School in Guizhou to offer his help. The 16-year-old boy tried to imagine how serious the drought(干旱) was for the students at that school. However, he realized it was more serous than he had imagined when he saw the sign “DON’T wash clothes with water, or you will be punished(惩罚).”
Because of the drought, the school has been short of water for a long time. Each student has only one bottle of water ever day for washing and drinking. The drought has made the poor students much poorer.
Chen is a student from Beijing Chaoyang Foreign Language School. He took part in the school’s Rain & Project from April 2 to 10.
The project idea came from Chen Shuai’s classmate Long Ni. One day, she heard a sad story about Jiang Xiaowei, a poor firl in Mashan School, who stopped going to school because of drought. So Long Ni started this project to help the school. In one day, 3000 students made over 10,000 donations of water, books and clothes.
Chen and other four students went to the Mashan School and gave the donations with five teachers. They visited poor families, made surveys and had classes at the school.
Wang Longhao, 16, was worried about the school’s poor learning environment.“The blackboards and playground are too shabby(破旧的) to use,”Wang said. “Besides, there really aren’t enough teachers. A teacher has to teach both history and English, and even the cook is a class teacher.”
Although life isn’t easy, students at the school have a positive attitude(积极的态度) towards life and they are quite willing to learn. That’s what moved 16-year-old Chen Shuai most.
“They sang their songs together as usual before class every afternoon. After class, the students asked us to tell them things about Beijing and our studies,” Chen said.“You can see the passion(热情) in them. I believe it will make a difference. Their futures will be bright.”
