Chinese is a kind of language which is spoken by the largest number of people as their mother tongue in the world. A distinct difference between Chinese and Western languages is that the former consists of characters rather than letters. Chinese boasts the longest history in existing writing systems. In China, people from different regions may not understand each other’s dialects. However, they can communicate with each other smoothly and successfully thanks to the unified written form of Chinese characters. Chinese has historically played an essential role in the solidarity of the Chinese people. Today, with the rapid growth of China’s economy and its growing global influence, an increasing number of foreigners also start to learn Chinese.
