SAT语法中定语从句的引导词省略
引导词是分清主句和从句的重要标示。学员在理解sat语法考题时，很重要的一个步骤就是通过寻找引导词理解句子的结构。定语从句中引导词有可以省略的情况，对此情况理解不清楚造成了很多学员对句子结构理解不清，从而不能正确地解决题目。试举一例：
The first hint of role ice played in shaping the world has appeared in the late 1930s when scientists postulated that sheets of ice once covered much of the globe.
A. world has appeared
B. world appeared
C. world appearing
D. world, it appeared
E. world,which appeared
这道题目真确答案是B，当时很多同学选择了E选项。他们的理由是，本句有四个谓语动词played， appeared，postulated和covered，但是只有when，that两个连词，根据单句个数比连词多一个的原则，答案应该选择有连词的也就是E选项。他们的理论是对的，但是他们忽略了定语从句可以省略引导词(连词)的情况。SAT常考的定语从句省略有两种情况：1，引导词(关系代词)在从句中作宾语时。2，why，when和where这三个关系副词也常省略。上文中的例子即属于第一种情况，还原后句子应该是这样：The first hint of role (that) ice played in shaping the world has appeared in the late 1930s when scientists postulated that sheets of ice once covered much of the globe. 我们可以清楚地看到that指代role，作为从句中played宾语。
熟悉理论并不能帮助学生轻松的解题。对于这种省略情况很好的办法就是，让学生找出每个谓语动词的同时，也要找出它的主语也就是动作发出者。上述例子中role只能是played的动作承受者，因为大家都熟悉play a role 的结构，因此ice才是主语。这样ice played就构成了一个句子，它的作用也就只能是修饰前面的role这个名词了。那么the hint of role 必须要有自己的谓语动词，因此答案只能在
A,B中选。根据时态确定为B。第二种情况的省略可以在下一题中体现出来。
During the 1980's and early 1990's, one reason highways in the United States became safer than ever, the use of seat belts increased to about 67percent nationwide.
(A)ever, the use of seat belts increased to about 67 percent nationwide
(B)ever, nationwide, the use of seat belts increased to about 67 percent
(C)ever, there was a nationwide increase in seat belt use to 67 percent
(D)ever since they increased seatbelt use to 67 percent nationwide
(E)ever was that the use of seatbelt nationwide increased to about 67 percent
这道让很多学员理不清头绪的题目，可以用上述的方法很好地得到解决。先找出句中的复合谓语became safer，根据语意它的主语只能是highways，因此highways became safer 就是一完整的句子。这个从句省略了why，用来修饰前面的the reason。The reason 必须有自己的谓语动词，因此选择E。
