Visitors still stop at the old house in Scituate, Massachusetts. But the house is not what brings them there. What they want to see is the old stone well beside it—and the iron-bound water bucket that's put on its edge.
Two hundred years ago, this farmhouse was the home of Samuel Woodworth. During the long summers of his childhood, young Samuel would often pause at the well. It was a welcome break, especially on a hot afternoon. On such a day he would eagerly draw a bucketful of cold water and SATisfy his thirst with a refreshing drink.
When he was fourteen, Woodworth left Scituate for New York City, where he started his own newspaper. Later he worked as an editor at other newspapers and magazines while writing novels, plays, and poetry in his spare time. His life was busy, and he rarely had time to visit the family farm.
But Woodworth never stopped thinking of his Scituate home. After work one evening, Woodworth poured himself a glass of city water. After that, he remarked to his wife, Lydia, how wonderful it would be to have a long, cool drink from the oaken bucket at his father's well. Lydia had a suggestion: Why not put it to poetry?
It was a suggestion Woodworth could not resist. That night he wrote The Bucket. In it he captured the world of his childhood on a hot summer day and the simple joy of stopping for a drink at his father's well.
His poem was an instant success. It seemed to touch everyone who had ever been homesick. At the height of its popularity, The Old Oaken Bucket (as it came to be called) was translated into four languages, and the words were set to a popular tune of the time. Over the years, countless people have read or sung Woodworth's ode to his boyhood. Today it is the official song of Scituate, Massachusetts.

The World Health Organization report compared the “obesity-related behaviors” for youngsters across 42 nations. And it reveals UK kids are among the laziest.
Among teenage girls, the Scots toped the league table for most screen time, with 80 per cent spending at least two hours a day on computers. Wales came fourth with 76 per cent, and England seventh with 75 per cent. Girls in Armenia and Albania were least likely to spend hours idling online.
Screen time figures for boys were even higher. Wales was second in the European “couch potato” league, with 85 per cent glued to their screens for at least two hours. Scotland was third with 84 per cent, and England 15th with 77 per cent. Boys in Switzerland and Portugal were least likely to dedicate two hours a day to sitting in front of a computer.
Lead researcher Dr Jo Inchley, from the University of St Andrews, said social media was impACTing on kids' health. She said, “We know there are risks, such as cyber bullying and impact on mental health. Also, there are longer-term impacts on physical health from being sedentary. One of the main challenges is that this kind of activity (social media and computer use) is so much part of young people's lives these days.” She said more needs to be done to get kids moving throughout the day.
Dr Steven Mann, research director for UK Active said the findings were “alarming”. He said, “Modern life has changed, but when teens are spending hours hunched over Facebook, Instagram and videogames, they simply aren't getting the exercise that they need. These alarming inactivity figures show that playtime is over before it has started for too many children, putting them at far GREater risk of future conditions like heart disease, cancer and type 2 diabetes.”
Tam Fry, from the National Obesity Forum, warned Brit teens are now “slaves to hand-held devices”. And the WHO warns four in five fat teens will continue to struggle with their weight throughout life. The report also shows less than half of UK youngsters consume fruit or veg daily.
(A)28. What do we know about the “obesity-related behaviors” for youngsters across 42 nations?

It would certainly be the most unique car on the school run. Dutch researchers have unveiled the Stella Lux, a four-sweater family car that is not only powered by the sun, but generates much more energy than it uses. It can travel 621 miles on a full charge, and even comes with an app to automatically work out the most efficient routes.
Stella Lux was developed by Solar Team Eindhoven (STE), a group of 21 students from different faculties of the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). The team won the Cruiser Class title 2 years ago and that is in 2015 with its first car, Stella.
“By deciding to further improve on our solar-powered four-person car, we're once again aiming to win while at the same time proving that this energy-positive family car offers a feasible future prospect,” says Solar Team Eindhoven's Team Manager Tom Selten.
This year the student team is once again taking part in the biennial( 两年一次的) Bridgestone World Solar Challenge in Australia. The race for solar-powered cars covers a distance of 3,000 km, and goes right through the heart of the outback from Darwin to Adelaide.
After the World Solar Challenge the team are planning a tour through the Netherlands, China and the USA. “With Stella Lux we want to take the next step in bringing a solar car to the consumer. Therefore we want to show Lux to as many people as possible and we hope to inspire them,” says Tom Selten. “We see a future where everybody drives a solar car, where all cars produce energy instead of consuming it.”
Stella Lux generates electricity via 5.8 sq m (62.4 sq ft) of solar cells and has an additional battery capacity of 15 kWh. A full charge provides a range of over 1,000 km (621 mi) in the Dutch climate or 1,100 km (684 mi) in the Australian climate, and the car has a top speed of 125 km/h (78 mph). To achieve this figure, the car has been designed to be both lightweight and aerodynamic. The efficiency of Stella Lux is improved by using a specially designed navigation system. The system monitors weather and chooses the best route accordingly.
(D)32. What is TRUE about Stella Lux?
A. A solar-powered four-person car aimed at schools.
B. It produces less energy than it uses.
C. A full charge can't provide it with a range of 621 miles.
D. It works out the best route with the help of a specially designed navigation system.
(A)33. What do we know about Solar Team Eindhoven?
A. They are car developers. B. They are car racers.
C. They are car advertisers. D. They are car dealer s.
(A)34. How is the car designed to achieve its top speed?
A. By making the car lightweight and aerodynamic.
B. By using a specially designed navigation system.
C. By generating electricity via solar cells.
D. By improving its solar-powered system.
【解析】根据文章最后一自然段“To achieve this figure, the car has been designed to be both lightweight and aerodynamic.”
(C)35. What is the team's attitude towards this energy-positive family car's future?
A. Negative. B Worried. C. Optimistic. D. Uncertain.
【解析】根据文章第三自然段“...this energy-positive family car offers a feasible future prospect”和文章倒数第二自然段“We see a future where everybody drives a solar car, where all cars produce energy instead of consuming it.”
In my experience as a human resources manager, many job applicants are unsuccessful because they fail to prepare for interviews. If you want to get that job, you must do your “homework”!
36.__E__ It is essential that you know what the company produces or sells, who its customers are, its size, and whether it has recently expanded or is planning to. If you also understand the culture of the organization, you can give yourself a competitive advantage by ensuring you are “on message” during the interview. 37.__D__ Look out for words like “mission statement” and “vision” when you are doing your research; that is where you will find them.
38.__B__You need to discover what exactly the job will involve, what sort of person the company wants and how your skills will fit the position. This is less easy, but the general information about the company will give you some clues. 39.__A__There are so many websites giving information about different occupations that you are sure to find something useful. You could also ask friends if they know anyone doing a similar job that you could talk to.
Plan for the questions you will be asked and practise your answers. 40.__G__Have a look at these and think about how you would reply. Some of the questions will be quite straightforward. Others, however, are tricky and could catch you out if you have not thought them through ahead of time. For example, you might be asked, “What are your strengths and weaknesses?” It is not easy to give an honest answer to the “weaknesses” part without sounding negative unless you are well prepared in advance.
A. I suggest you search online for the job title.
B. Get information about the job itself.
C. The Internet is an excellent source.
D. By culture, I mean the company's principles and ideals.
E. Learn as much as you can about the employer.
F. Look at the products yourself.
G. You can find lists of questions on various career websites.
下文提到“It is essential that you know what the company produces or sells, who its customers are, its size, and whether it has recently expanded or is planning to.”
本段主要讲尽可能了解雇佣方的信息,由“If you also understand the culture of the organization,...”可知后文主要涉及企业文化的信息,由“Look out for words like ‘mission statement’ and ‘vision’ when you are doing your research;...”
“You need to discover what exactly the job will involve, what sort of person the company wants and how your skills will fit the position.”
从该段的结构分析“You could also ask friends if they know anyone doing a similar job that you could talk to.”
由本段主题句“Pla n for the questions you will be asked and practise your answers.”

M: What's the difference between the two?
W: Well, the Alpha is designed for gaming and high performance. It comes with a large screen, while the Beta is more for the average worker. It is very basic and comes with a smaller monitor. The Alpha is our best-selling model and was recently written about in The New York Times as the best new PC of 2017!
M: The Alpha sounds great. But I don't play games too often.
W: Do you have children? They probably play games and would love to see you bring home this famous computer. They have probably already heard about it from their friends.
M: I do have two kids, but I prefer them to play sports, not video games.
W: OK. The Beta is cheaper. It is also great.
M: Well, I am interested in basic and simple things, I suppose. Thanks for your help. I will take a look around and come to you when I make up my mind.
Text 10
Thanks to this autumn's above-average rainfall, California's Death Valley National Park is experiencing a super bloom of wildflowers—a rare occurrence that happens about once every 10 years. Death Valley once held the world record for the hottest temperature—about 57 degrees Celsius, on July 10, 1913. Temperatures peak in summer and cool off slightly in winter, which also coincides with the rainy season. The Valley's annual rainfall is just two inches—sometimes it gets no rain at all. But this year, the park got over three inches of rain during the first two weeks in October. The above-average rainfall was enough to cause the growth of millions of wildflower seeds that have been dormant for years. The last time a bloom like this happened was in 2005, and the time before that was in 1998. The show won't last forever. Most of the flowers will fade in the next few weeks as temperatures start to rise. Now, the best flower show is at the south end of Death Valley National Park, along Badwater Road, south of Furnace Creek.

(D)24. Why does the author use flashback (倒叙) in Paragraph 2?

D. Not many people paid much attention to the poem at first.

The way people lead their lives nowadays never fails to surprise me. While people in the past used to solve their own problems, there is no shortage 61.__of__ advice about anything you care to think of. As a result, people almost seem to have stopped thinking for themselves. I suffer a little from 62.__forgetfulness__(forgetful). When some friends notice it, they want to ignore my independence and offer 63.____me__(I) advice. “I'll tell you how you can improve your memory,” they say, 64.__and/so__ they start their advice. I just stand or sit there, 65.__listening__(listen) like some kid being lectured to by an adult.

Advice which 68.__is__given__(give) without being asked for is called ‘unsolicited advice' in English, namely ‘not requested advice’.

W: I know. It's a good time for me because I'll be finished with the project that you give me. Also, I want to go when there will be many festivals and events.

W: Good morning, sir. How can I help you?
M: Hi. I'm looking to buy a new computer.
W: Do you need a desktop or a laptop?
M: Oh, I work from home. I need something that will last.
W: Well, we have two main desktops at the moment: the Alpha and the Beta.
